A Chicago native, I attended public and independent school in Chicago. I graduated from Kenyon College in 1991 and shortly thereafter found myself assistant teaching in my alma mater, Francis W. Parker. For the next 14 years, I taught preschool, fourth and fifth grade in independent schools in Chicago ad the northern Suburbs. I developed a depth of experience and understanding of child development, curriculum design, parent dialogue, and then role of authentic relationships in successful school partnerships.
In 2011 I joined a dynamic team of educators and thinkers to build a new independent school in Chicago. This work provided me myriad opportunities to collaborate with parents, teachers, groundbreaking design and education innovators, as well as political and business leaders. It takes a robust village to build a school. Together we built an enduring curricular and community framework in Bennett Day School , and the school continues to thrive today.
I came to parenting later in life, following a two year long journey exploring adoption and assited pregnancy. I built my community of family from immediate and chosen loved ones, and became a solo mama at the age of 41, 9 days after DCFS approved our brand new school. Twins, so to speak. As a solo mama I have learned the necessity for connection, the power of laughter and tears to heal and bind us, and the joy found in asking for help on the journey. My own work is to parent in accordance with my values, and to fill our days with purpose, joy and connection.
